My Personal Learning Network

Filed under: Uncategorized — mihall at 8:22 am on Sunday, May 3, 2009

My personal learning network has grown tremendously since the beginning of the semester. Obviously, ED 483 has impacted my growth. My PLN now consists of twitter, picassa, delicious, and wikispaces, which I had no idea existed before ED 483. Wikispaces and picassa are my two favorite tools from my PLN. I love my wikispace because it keeps me organized with my schooling. Picassa is my favorite program for maintaining my photos because it allows me to touch up on blemishes and add really cool effects. I also enjoy delicious because when I’m writing a paper or doing a report, all my resources are saved in one spot and I can go to delicious to help me create my bibliography/reference page. I just remembered, I have edublogs in my personal learning network too, which I never had known of before. I don’t enjoy my blog. I like to write down things for me and me only, and things that I want to vent about (rather than things assigned to me). But you gotta do what you gotta do.

My Favorite Part of Kevin Kelley’s Video…

Filed under: Uncategorized — mihall at 3:37 pm on Tuesday, April 21, 2009

My favorite part of Kevin Kelley’s video was when he was talking about what was wrong with using Google so often to find out answers when we use the alphabet and pencils. His theory that our use of the web will be like our use of the alphabet and pencils seems to be a good theory to me. I am someone that completely relies on the web for my knowledge. If it weren’t for the web I would not learn a thing in any of my classes, things I miss from what my professors “teach” me, I look up on the web. Facts I do not know for a paper I am writing, I look up on the web. If I don’t know where I’m going, I look directions up on the web. This doesn’t make me stupid, if anything I think it makes us smart for knowing what resources are available to provide with the knowledge that we are looking for.

My Thoughts On Larry Lessig

Filed under: Uncategorized — mihall at 4:31 pm on Tuesday, April 14, 2009

I agree with Lessig that more of the material protected by copyright should be made available to creative people as a source for something new and creative.  I also agree that allowing someone to make a profit off of one’s complete creative work is wrong, but allowing people to use it as a source of their own expression should be legalized. Copying something as a source of profit is wrong, even if the person that created the work is extremeley wealthy, it is still wrong to make a profit off of someone else’s work.  These opinions of mine are coming from someone that does illegally download somebody’s work, does burn cds that I’m probably not allowed to, etc.

Personally I think every argument about the copyright laws goes back to MONEY rather than creativity.  In some instances artists shoudl be thankful for people illegally copying their work.  For an example, I wouldn’t have even heard of some singers or showed any interest in the artist if I wasn’t able to “illegally download” their music.  I never listened to rap ever, and recently I downloaded a bunch of new rap songs and uploaded them to my ipod.  Without this ability I would still be completely naive to some rappers and their music, and I wouldn’t be singing their music or showing any interest to it when it comes on at the club or on the radio, etc.  I now show more interest to rap singers in magazines, conversations, websites, etc. becasue I am more aware as to who people are from their music I now listen to.  Without copyrighting their work, I would have never known who these rappers even were or what they sing.

My Thoughts on…”TL Advisor Blog; Degree of Difficulty”

Filed under: Uncategorized — mihall at 7:09 pm on Monday, April 13, 2009

The Degree of Difficulty blog caught my attention because I know of a select few that are just like the writer of the blog.  In this blog the writer basically gave me the impression of, “I know technology is really important, and there are soo many useful tools for me to use, but I’m too lazy to get my hands dirty and practice with it.”  He thinks technology is all too complex because of the constant updates and new tools being discovered.  The truth is technology will never be 100% simple and will never stop changing, so rather than complaining about how complex it is, you just need to experiment and try to become involved in learning the new discoveries.  THere are a select few in our ED 483 that make our class seem soo stressful and difficult to understand/follow, when in reality they probably just didn’t give the time to experiment (I could be assuming here and I’m sorry if I am).  I know that nearly everything I’ve learned in ED 483 is brand new to me, such as wikispaces.  I haven’t even heard of wikispace before ED 483 and the moment I was told about it I started experimenting the “complex” website and realized it really isn’t all that complex.  In order to see the simplicity in technology you just have to set the time aside to explore on your own.  That’s the beauty in technology is you can experiment and test things in any way you want to.  For the writer of this blog the technology really isn’t that complex, it’s the lack of effort given to find out more and practice with the technology.  In my opinion at least.

My Thoughts on… “Make Your Own Handwriting into a Font”

Filed under: Uncategorized — mihall at 6:58 pm on Monday, April 13, 2009

I read “Make your own handwriting into a font” because I’m always interested in any new technology tools that our out in the virtual world.  This sounded like a really cool tool so I visited their website.  It in fact is a really neat tool and very easy to do.  It involves printing off a template with the alphabet and a square to write your own handwriting underneath each letter. You then scan the template after writing your own letters into the template, and upload it to the website.  The website then turns your handwriting into a font.  It’s really cool and is a way of personalizing something you have typed whether it be a letter or even your signature!  Not only is this tool completely free but it’s very easy to follow the directions.  If someone does online scrap booking they may want to use their own handwriting font to personalize their scrapbooks.  This is really cool and who would have ever thought such a technology tool would be invented. I’ll have to try it when I’m not swamped with a ton of homework.  : )

My Thoughts on…”200 Virtual Worlds for Kids”

Filed under: Uncategorized — mihall at 6:40 pm on Monday, April 13, 2009

I recently read 200 Virtual Worlds for Kids and there was a statistic mentioned in the blog that, “38 of the virtual worlds products are explicitly intended for children six and younger.”  This was an amazing statistic to me because even though I’m learning that children are using technology at a younger and younger age, I never expected a six year old or younger to know enough about technology to get around a virtual world.  My first time on a computer had to have been when I was in about third grade and it involved playing Oregon Trail, not roaming around on a virtual world through the world wide web.  I know that ED 483 is all about getting children educated about technology and incorporating it into learning, but I think I would be kind of hesitant about allowing my six year old or younger to be on a virtual world on the web.  There are too many ways for old creepy predators to take advantage of such a thing.  I guess with my guidance I would allow them to roam around a bit.  It is quite amazing that six year olds and younger are capable of doing such a thing though, it’s a reality check to how important/necessary technology is going to be in their lives as they get older.

TED Videos!

Filed under: Uncategorized — mihall at 1:17 am on Wednesday, April 1, 2009

It took me a very long time to actually get into these videos.  I tried probably three different times, and with life as difficult as it is right now I would fall asleep to every video (thats why I just don’t have cable anymore, it puts me right to sleep).  I ended up watching the Bill Gates, Ken Robinson, and Evan Williams videos. I would have to say my favorite video was the Twitter presentation by Evan Williams, only because it was the shortest.  My second favorite was the presentation on Creativity presented by Ken Robinson and this was because of the way he presented very good points but at the same time using comedy, keeping me somewhat engaged.  The Bill Gates presentation is the one that was hardest for me to get into, I really do not care to hear a presentation on Malaria.  Although, once I fast fowarded to the education section I then became more interested.

I’ll start with my favorite, the Twitter presentation.  I’ve been so busy in life that I always see these new technology assignments as a hassle, and I never give them the benefit of the doubt.  I immedietly say to myself, “I don’t have time for this, nor do I think it serves a purspose in my busy life right now.”  (This class would be soo much fun to take in the summer, with no other school work going on!!.)  The truth is after viewing Evan William’s presentation on Twitter, I can see the purpose in such a tool.  When I signed up for a twitter account I thought to myself or probably stated out loud, “why on earth do I need random people knowing what I’m doing with my day?”  I saw Twitter as a status updater for stating what I am doing with my day.  In fact the day before watching the video somebody asked me if I had heard of Twitter and what I think of it.  I said “I personally think it is pointless.”  I learned to do some research before immedietly shutting something down, because now that I viewed the video I do see a purpose in Twitter. It’s not a tool to update people what you are doing every second of the day, it is a tool to update people of useful information.  For an example, after Evan Williams finished his presentation he already had many people twitter about his presentation.  The twittering done enabled him to know what was good and bad about his presentation, what people were confused about and left wondering, etc.  I want to get my sister and family members using twitter so we can get updates on my niece who lives far away.  My sister just doesn’t have the time to call all of us and give us the little details about Delaney’s day.  With twitter she could update us all at the same time.  I have searched Twitter on the WLUCTV website to find what their twitter name was.  Under the article, one person expressed concern in the reasoning for Twitter.  I commented back and gave the twitter link for them to view, to better understand the use in the site.

Ok now on to Ken Robinson (what a comedian!).  My favorite two quotes in Ken’s presentatoin was “if you’re not prepared to be wrong, you’ll never come up with anything original” and “we don’t grow into creativity…we are educated out of it.”  I was able to connect this video with myself, someone with absolutely zero creativity.  It is very true that I am never willing to give creativeness a try, as I believe I will fail.  I am worried about being compared to others, being laughed at, or just outright not being able to do what I have imagined in my head.  I’m down right worried I’ll “fail” or “be wrong,” when really with creativity, there is no right or wrong.  If something is an original then how can it be compared to other things or be classified as bad or good, right or wrong, etc.?  I never blaimed education on my lack of creativity, but now i can see why that would be a good excuse.  Even in the grade school I observe at, their creativeness is limited.  Rather than being told to create their own Easter eggs this week, the teacher had an egg already printed out with designs already on it.  The students just needed to color in the eggs.  These are third grade students and they would have been perfectly capable of creating their own easter eggs from scratch, they each would have been more original and creative. Who wants to view 24 of very similar art works anyways, when each student could have created their very own art?  It’s even worse when you get into the older grades, in some schools it seems non-existing.  The world is so focused on the curriculum, and creativity doesn’t seem to be one of the expectations (I could be wrong).  In high school I was enrolled in band for two years, and even then I had no opportunity to be creative.  I had to follow exactly what the music sheet and director told me.  I was playing other people’s creative music, not my own.  All my other classes were so straight foward and planned out by the state guidelines that I most definetely was never given the opportunity to try to be creative.  Creativity is so important for so many reasons.  Creativity is what can allow us to be ourselves, and create a world of variety.

Lastly, let me talk about the presentation given by Bill Gates.  I’m going to be completely honest I agree with almost everything Bill Gates had stated about education in his presentation, especially due to the fact that most of it was statistics that he obviously did not make up.  I was not at all angered by the video, I’m glad someone is willing to tell the truth.  I know many of my classmates are going to completely hate me for believing and agreeing with everything Bill said, but let’s face it the man is a genius and he’s just trying to better the education systems.  The quote that should have upset me but didn’t was, “once somebody has taught for three years, their teacher quality does not change thereafter.”  In one way I can believe this, and in another point of view I can defend this.  I think when a teacher is in their first three years of educating, they are the most dedicated, refreshed, and willing to make their teaching the best it can be.  Newest teachers are going to try their hardest at being that ”good teacher” right off the bat during their first job as an educator.  After they warm up to their job, that dedication, refreshment, and willingness goes out the window and everything becomes a pattern that is followed from then on out.  They become comfortable with their career and someteimes comfortableness can lead to laziness.  Now in defense to the comment, I can’t see how a teacher’s quality can not increase because they are constantly learning the new tricks of the trade with their experiences with a variety of different students.  My question is are these tricks those that make their job easier and classroom more manageable, or are they tricks that make their quality of teaching better?  With all honestly, I think I would choose that after years of educating, teachers learn better tricks to manage their class but not necessarily teach better quality information.

My thoughts on peers’ technology uses..

Filed under: Uncategorized — mihall at 2:30 am on Monday, March 23, 2009

On Kyle’s blog he wrote about a Cool Text: Graphics Generator which he found using the Web 2.0, Cool Tools for Schools website. I decided to take a look for myself. I have been able to use yet another technology tool for my wikispace. On the right hand side where I have the name of my pages, I have created a different text for my blog using the cool text website. I do not have the time right this second, but eventually I will go through every page name on my wikispace and change the text to something more interesting using cool text. I am happy that Kyle shared this source because Cool Tools for Schools is such an awesome resource, but at the same time it’s so big its hard to just roam around (I’d be on for days!). Thanks for the recommendation Kyle, I can use this source for decorating my myspace too. You were right, you’re “Neguanee Tennis” looks much better with a background than just a plain times new roman font or something like that. Hopefully you didn’t start another addiction for me : )

Bobby’s blog has lead me to waste about a half hour of my time because it was so interesting and humorous. I cannot believe that this NBA player actually twittered at half time, what’s the world coming to? I did read the newspaper article, and then decided to follow him (whoever he is?!? haha) on twitter. I did see that one comment he made on twitter was, “About to take my nap, but I’m looking for some answers here, what’s the difference between halftime twitting and halftime interview?” That’s very true, at least twitter doesn’t involve someone asking you a bunch of questions as to why you are playing bad and twitter doesn’t expect a reply. Blogging is becoming so very popular, and I too did not notice this. Thank you for pointing this out to an even better extent Bobby. I just wish I could blog all day on anything and everything I wanted, not what I was assigned (but I definitely understand we need to be graded on something). I love blogging because it’s like my own person writing journal; it’s just much easier because it’s faster to type and I can also use links and images to help me out. I can’t wait to repeat this story to all my friends that enjoy sports (two of my friends were actually at that game, I’m going to get their thoughts on the situation.)

I also had to comment on Chrissi’s technology obsession as I am part of it with her. I agree I am in love with Google docs because of all the reasons she had stated. I thought I’d also mention that we do have a Google doc created between four of us girls, and every night we update it. There is a heading for each class we are in, and below the heading we all add what has been assigned for those classes. Unfortunately, I feel like I’ve been the only one on there lately, so many of the assignments posted are old. We were successful at it for quite some time though, and it was extremely helpful. I can see introducing my students or students’ parents to this someday, to keep updated with what is due. No matter how great of a student one is, it’s easy to be completely distracted by life and have a brain fart. I did know about Google Docs before ED 483, but I never though about how to use it as an effective educator until just this semester (after I completely missed an assignment due to being so caught up in other things.)

Another One Of My Technology Obsessions..

Filed under: Uncategorized — mihall at 1:17 am on Monday, March 23, 2009

I have been absolutely obsessed with Picassa. I should get a job working for them because I have promoted the program like no other, and all my friends have it now. I use Picassa every time I upload pictures, which is a lot. I love photos so much I usually look at old ones every week just to bring back memories and laughs. Picassa is so great because you can edit the pictures in almost every way; yes you can do what they do for magazine covers and make someone look perfect! Sometimes there’s those pictures that you refuse to share with others due to bad lighting, bad skin, double chins, etc. Picassa has now made it fun, easy, and possible to fix those blemishes all by yourself. I highly suggest to get started with Picassa if you haven’t already. There is some trouble using the retouch and red eye at first, due to a saving error. I had to read up on it (using others blogs actually) and finally know what the problem is. If anybody has any questions how to get your final touches to save just contact me, I’ve become a Picassa pro.

Ok I will link you to a Google album I just created, which has two of the same pictures, one is a before and the other is the after. I have included in the caption what I’ve changed in the second picture. It is a picture of my niece and me, I figured using myself would be better than using someone else because that could be insulting (plus I haven’t got any body’s permission). Ssshhh! Don’t tell anybody that I do this to my pictures, it’d be nice if people actually think my skin is that good : ) (I’m soo weird I know haha)

My Wikispace and Jing

Filed under: Uncategorized — mihall at 3:56 pm on Monday, February 23, 2009

I have fallen in love with wikispace. Rather than having to open a million documents at the same time to check my syllabi for my classes on a daily basis, I have created a wikispace to keep everything organized. I do not like using web ct for this because the syllabi have to be downloaded and it also takes some effort to find some of them. Check out my wikispace to see what I’ve done. I have also included direct links that I use everyday. I have set my wikispace as my homepage and it is sooo convenient. I have also downloaded jing and have got the hang of it. I will insert a picture of my wikispace by using a picture I captured through jing.
